INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS ATTENDING CENTRE

Recommencement of Onsite Teaching at ATL

Following recent emails, you will be aware that ATL have been working on a plan to recommence face-to-face learning to a small number of learners when it is safe to do so. This will be for learners who are required to undertake practical assessments or exams in order to complete their qualification and progress to the next level or into employment. Teaching staff will all continue to support you remotely if you are not required to attend, as they have been doing over the recent weeks.

By following Government guidance and implementing strict social distancing measures, ATL will commence a phased reopening with individual inductions and teaching in the week commencing Monday 15 June.

Attendance will be strictly by appointment – you will receive an email and/or telephone call from your tutor to confirm a timeslot for attendance. You will notice a number of changes around the building, including floor markings, hand sanitiser stations, desks and workstations moved to 2 metre distances, closure of refectory areas etc. Your tutor will take you through a short safety induction when you arrive to ensure you are familiar with the measures in place to keep you safe.

The safety of our learners and staff continues to be our utmost priority. We understand that these are anxious times and appreciate that you may have concerns regarding returning to the centre and would like to reassure you of the plans in place to protect you. Your tutors and Learner Support are available to answer any queries, but we hope the information in this briefing will be a helpful starting point.

We have implemented the following social distancing and safety measures:

  • implemented 2 metre social distancing with floor markings across all sites as per government guidance
  • attendance by confirmed appointment, with entry to building by buzzer only
  • implemented a no passing rule on all stair cases
  • hand-washing and sanitising available in thoroughfares and landings
  • active social distancing monitoring throughout sites by staff

Please also be reassured that we will continue at all times to follow the guidelines from the Government and Public Health England. This does mean that some details of our safety measures may change over time, and any new information will be shared with you all via email and the website.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the majority of cases, learners will continue to work from home and have support and delivery remotely from their tutors. Attendance in centre will only be for those needing to complete exams or practical assessments to achieve their qualifications and you can only attend if you have a confirmed appointment with your tutor.

What information will I be given if I am asked to return to centre for an appointment?

You will be given a full induction at the start of your appointment, which will make you familiar with the site and explain what social distancing measures are in place. You will be given your timetable for any future dates you need to attend and have a full induction into the workshop you will be working in.

What if I do not want to get on a public bus due to being afraid of catching COVID-19?

If you do not want to use public transport, the Government advice is to consider travelling on your bike or to walk. You might look at arrangements to get dropped off by parents or members of your household. If you are having problems getting to the centre, speak to your tutor when arranging your appointment to see if what other safe options can be agreed.

Can I get a lift in my mate’s car?

No. The Government guidance is to maintain 2 metres social distancing and you cannot be socially distanced in a car and remain 2 metres apart. You can only share a car ride with someone in your household (someone you live with).

 What do I do when I arrive?

ON ARRIVAL – Please report to the Norwich Union House site front entrance and ring the buzzer for access. You will then be asked to enter and wait in reception whilst your tutor is notified, who will then take you to where you need to go. This guidance also applies to any learners requiring access to the Lloyds building.

How will I know what to do when I arrive onsite?

If you are required to come onsite to complete practical work as part of your course or undertake assessments, you will be given a full induction at the start of your appointment.

Do I need to continue to social distance if I attend the centre?

Yes. The Government advice is that we all should maintain social distancing measures. Whilst in the centre you will be asked to:

  • sit at desks or use workstations that are 2 metres apart;
  • follow the 2 metres rule whilst walking around the centre;
  • visit the toilet one after another;
  • have staggered start and break times;
  • do not gather with friends in close social gatherings but always remain 2 metres apart.

How can I maintain social distancing in a workshop, salon or classroom with my group?

It will not be possible for you to be with all members of your group due to government guidance on social distancing, which is why we will be seeing you on a strict appointment-only basis. ATL’s buildings have been mapped out to enable social distancing in all areas. Each workshop, salon and classroom will have a maximum number of learners allowed for any appointment timeslots to ensure you have a safe working area and you can maintain 2 metre social distancing whilst completing your practical work. Your tutor will ensure this is maintained for the safety of everyone.

Do I need to wear a facemask?

No. College spaces are not considered to be enclosed under Government guidance, so there is no requirement to wear a facemask. If you intend to travel by public transport some bus companies are asking passengers to wear a facemask. If you are using public transport, please make sure you know the bus companies’ rules before you travel.

Can my tutor still demonstrate practical task so I know what to do?

Yes. Where a member of staff has to be within 2 metres distance to be able to safely demonstrate an activity to learners, appropriate PPE will be put in place. There will be different arrangements and restrictions depending on the kind of course you are doing, which is why you will receive an safety induction from your tutor at the start of your appointment.

What happens if I do not follow social distancing rules?

You will be given a full induction onsite to ensure you understand the rules around social distancing. Tutors and other key staff in attendance will be around to reinforce the rules around the site. You will be politely reminded to maintain 2 metre social distancing. If you persistently ignore the guidance and rules then you will be subject to the Learner Disciplinary Procedure and in the worst case be asked to leave the site for your safety and the safety of others.

Can I still get welfare or pastoral support if I am on site?

Yes. Whether you are studying remotely or on site, your tutor and Learner Support will be available for you to discuss your concerns and provide support or signposting if you require it.

What happens if I feel unwell and display symptoms of COVID19?

If you are displaying symptoms you should not attend the centre. If you start developing symptoms whilst on site you should let your tutor know, go home immediately and self-isolate in line with Government guidelines.

What if I cut myself or have an accident?

As always, ATL will have trained first aiders on site every day the centre is open, who will have additional PPE to protect them and you in the event that they may have to administer treatment.

Can I still use the refectory for lunch or breaks?

No. The refectory areas will remain closed to avoid social gatherings. Attendance timeslots will usually be only for the morning or afternoon (please check with your tutor when confirming your appointment). You are welcome to bring a cold drink or snack with you but should remain in your classroom or work area to avoid unnecessary movement around the buildings.
