If you’re interested in working in animal care, this qualification provides an introduction to gain work-related skills and activities within sector and prepare for you for further training.
What you will learn
The qualification includes units that will give an understanding of the following:
- Assist with the care of animals
- Principles of the care of animals
- Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals
- Assist with feedstuff for small animals
- Principles of the moment and handling of small animals
- Maintain the safety of self and others in the workplace
- Assist with the movement and handling of small animals
You will be assessed by:
- A range of work products, Q&A, professional discussions, practical assessments.

What to expect
You will be able to have hands-on experience with animal health and husbandry duties for the large variety of animals within the department. Animals including ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs to smaller mammals such as a mouse and hamster. We have a range of reptiles, including snakes, a tortoise and turtle, geckos and a bearded dragon. We even have small inverts such as snails, tarantulas, millipedes and a mantis!
What next
For those successfully achieving this qualification, can progress onto the Level 2 Certificate in Practical Animal Care Skills or the Level 2 Certificate in Animal Nursing Assistants
No formal qualification required, everyone is welcome to apply.
New entrants will be invited to attend the centre to complete the enrolment paperwork and to have a look around the centre.
