Who’s it for?

The aim of this qualification is to increase learners’ knowledge and understanding of common childhood illnesses to enable them to support the development and well-being of infants and children they support and care for.

What are the benefits of doing this course?

As well as attaining a nationally recognised qualification upon completion, candidates will gain a thorough understanding of the reasons why babies and children may become unwell.
Candidates will examine how infectious illnesses are spread in an early years setting and how good personal hygiene and cleanliness routines can protect children from certain illnesses.

Candidates will also learn how common childhood illnesses are treated and how to effectively respond to medical emergencies involving a baby or child in their care. For
example, they will look at how to recognise and respond to suspected meningitis, asthma attacks, hypoglycemia and severe allergic reactions.

The course also provides employers with a structured training programme, giving peace of mind that staff are equipped with the knowledge they need to support children who may
become unwell in the early years setting.

Course content:

The Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Common Childhood Illnesses comprises three mandatory units that are presented in two concise modular workbooks:

Module A:

Unit 1: Understand how to provide a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children.

Module B:

Unit 2: Understand common childhood illnesses.

Unit 3: Understand health emergencies and specific health conditions in an early years setting.

Progression opportunities:

By undertaking this programme, learners will be able to further their own continuous professional development, which may improve their career prospects. Learners may then progress on to further qualifications, such as other courses in childcare or related subjects.

 

Flexible attendance is available on this programme

Students must undertake remote sessions from their home or workplace, learners are expected undertake a minimum of 6 hours of remote input sessions per week.

 

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. However, learners may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved a Level 1 qualification in healthcare, social care, childcare or supporting learning.

This course is only available to 19+ learners who can receive free funding under ‘Local Flexibility’ Courses for jobs.
