What you will learn
This qualification has been specifically designed to develop the knowledge and skills to prepare you for employment within the Childcare sector.
The Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner Level 2 will prepare you with the skills to work with children between birth and 5 years, and give you the knowledge and understanding for children up to 7 years.
Ideal if
Ideal if you want a good, solid foundation for starting a career in Early Years. It will help you to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to work in this sector. This course is aimed at people who have little or no experience of working in a nursery or childcare environment.
What to expect
This programme includes two additional short courses in Certificate in Understanding Safeguarding and Prevent & Award in Mental Health Support.
Work Placement
You will need to be working or volunteering in a childcare placement, with children aged between birth to 5 years, as an important part of the assessment process involves evaluating skills in real working situations. A work placement is required for 1 day per week.
What next
These qualifications will enable you to progress in a wide range of childcare roles including:
- Nursery assistant
- Pre-school assistant
- Foundation unit – class assistant
You could progress on to do a Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship.

Salary and Career expectations
The average early years practitioner salary in the United Kingdom is £22,473 per year or £11.52 per hour. Entry level positions start at £20,996 per year while most experienced workers make up to £28,234 per year.
Attendance days
This is a RORO course, meaning you can start the qualification at any point throughout the year. Delivered roll-on roll-off, you can start at any time of the year with weekly one – one support from your tutor over 9 months.
- are 19-23 and do not already have a level 2 qualification
- are 24+ and unemployed or earn below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319 from April 2023)
