Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England)

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge needed to manage and lead others in residential settings for children and young people.

What you will learn

This qualification is part of the new children’s homes regulations which came into force in April 2015. It has replaced the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services (Children and Young People’s Residential Management Pathway) as the required qualification for those working in children’s homes.

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge needed to manage practice and lead others in residential childcare settings for children and young people. The qualification enables the practitioner to gain essential skills and knowledge for leading in a residential childcare setting, including leading and managing a team; leading and managing group living; leading practice to support children and young people; and implementing policies and procedures.

It also offers the learner the opportunity to cover optional topics which are particularly suited to specific residential childcare and respite care settings.

Ideal if

This qualification is suitable for learners already working in a childcare setting in a managerial role, it is also suitable for those that may wish to develop their career or increase understanding through professional development.

What to expect

The delivery of the qualification will be completed mainly online learning environment.

At level 4, learners should be able to identify and use relevant understanding, methods and skills to address broadly-defined, complex problems. It includes taking responsibility for planning and developing courses of action for yourself and others. You also need to understand different perspectives, approaches or schools of thought and the reasoning behind them.

There are no requirements for observation of workplace skills; however, the assessor will visit to obtain evidence of work products to support your written work. You will receive a login to an on-line portfolio account which can be accessed from any Wifi point or through 3/4G either at work, at home or in our centre.

You will be provided with a detailed course programme which will help you to achieve your qualification in 6 months. At the centre you will be welcome to access different resources to support your learning including laptops, desktops, tablets and textbooks.

What next

Learners can progress onto a Degree in a related discipline.

Work Placement

Learners will need to be working in the role of Deputy or Manager in an appropriate setting, or have the opportunity to carry out responsibilities associated with these roles to be able to study for the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England).

Attendance days

This is a RORO course, meaning you can start the qualification at any point throughout the year. This course is flexible so can be arranged around your schedule.

Salary and Career expectations

Learners can progress to the following job roles:

• registered residential childcare managers, deputies and assistant managers
• deputy and assistant managers in other adult or children and young people’s social care settings (further professional development/ qualification may be required once in post).

These positions make a salary in the range of £30,695 – £48,000 per year
