What you will learn
This course is for 16 – 18 students only. The Level 2 Diploma in ICT Systems Support qualification is an introduction to the knowledge, skills and understanding required to work as a system support technician, network support technician or telecoms support technician. Students will complete a range of units that meets their career plans within an ICT support environment such as Customer Support Provision, Maintain equipment and systems, Principles of ICT System and data security, Networking principles and Systems architecture. You will also learn essential employability skills valued by today’s employment market.
Including Extended Award in Employability Skills Level 2, Networking principles, equipment maintenance and technical support.

Ideal if
This qualification provides basic skills and knowledge for a learner to undertake a role in ICT and is ideal for those interested in working in ICT in a wide range of roles such as in a help desk environment or as part of a field support team in areas such as a systems technician, a network technician or a software support technician.
What to expect
You will attend our training center for two days a week where you will have the opportunity to network with other learners, share practice and access different resources to support your learning including dedicated teaching laboratories, laptops, desktops, tablets and textbooks. Your Tutor will support you throughout the course and you will be provided with a detailed course programme. You will learn in our technical teaching laboratories where you will be taught the knowledge and understanding required for the course and you will also have hands on experience learning technical skills such as how to install and upgrade components, network computers, maintain equipment and troubleshoot computers.

09:00 – 16:00 Tuesday and Thursday Term time only
The term starts in September and finishes in July with a big celebration in the Guildhall. All your family and friends are invited to watch you receive your certificates.
What next
This qualification aims to provide learners with a number of progression options. The knowledge and skills gained will help prepare you for further relevant industry qualifications or apprenticeship in the field of either IT or business. You can either stay in Further Education and continue your studies on a Level 3 Diploma in either ICT or a related subject or use your qualification to make the move into employment or an advanced apprenticeship. Alternatively you could progress into higher studies at University.
Wider Curriculum activities
As part of the course you will participate in meaningful employer engagement which will include the involvement of practising professionals and real industry environments which will allow students to understand the knowledge and skills involved – not just in theory – but in practice too.
Work placements
All learners are encouraged to complete a number of hours at a good quality work placement, to enhance their knowledge and skills in the business industry. The Business Services Department have very good established links with lots of local businesses and will be able to support you to find a great placement.
What it feels like to be a student
Class group sizes are between 10 and 20 students with a dedicated tutor. Support staff are on site such as pastoral care, finance and careers advice.

Students come from a variety of schools across Plymouth: they all help each other out and develop a really good bond over the year encouraging each
other to achieve. Most students never want to leave and move onto higher level courses.
Salary and Career expectations
As a qualified IT technician you can expect on average a starting salary of £22,000 and can go up to £70,000 depending on your experience and which part of the sector you work in. Jobs are varied and include roles such as Network Engineer, Network Technician, Systems Engineer, Network Administrator, Infrastructure Technician, Help Desk Technician, first or second line support. In Plymouth there are a high number of businesses who recruit newly skilled Technicians annually.
