This qualification will provide the core practical skills and knowledge, to help you to seek employment, or further learning and training, within the animal care and management industries.
What you will learn
You’ll develop strong practical abilities that are vital for animal care roles, learning how to work safely and confidently around animals in a variety of settings.
Key areas of study include:
- Animal husbandry and health care
- Safe animal handling techniques
- Feeding and nutrition planning
- Understanding animal behaviour and welfare
- Exploring different animal breeds and their characteristics
- Animal Biology
- Essential Health and Safety
By the end of the course, you will be well-prepared with the core skills required for progressing into further study or beginning a career in the animal care industry.
Ideal if
You want to work with animals either directly hands- on or within wider allied services or businesses. Such as zookeeper, wildlife assistant, assistant warden, becoming self-employed and take on roles such as an animal trainer.
This qualification is ideal if you wish to progress up through to university, enabling you to gain UCAS points based on your final grade.

What to expect
You will be able to have hands on experience with animal health and husbandry duties for the large variety of animals within the department. Animals including ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs to smaller mammals such as a mouse and hamster. We have a range of reptiles, including snakes, a tortoise and turtle, geckos and a bearded dragon. We even have small inverts such as snails, tarantulas, millipedes and a mantis!
What next
This qualification enables you to apply to a range of animal based degrees at university. You could study courses such as: Animal Management Foundation Degree, BSc (Hons) in Animal Science, BSc (Hons) in Animal Management BSc (Hons) in Animal Management with Wildlife Conservation.
You could also go directly into work, in rescues, rehabilitation, pet shops, entry level roles in veterinary settings, kennels and catteries and grooming facilities.
Employer Engagement
Throughout the course you will be offered trips or professionals coming to the centre, to develop more knowledge of the sector. From rescues, to zoo trips, or specialists coming in to give you an insight to what they do – so you can see what is out there for you!
Attendance days: 16-18 year old & 19+ Learners – Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00am – 4:00pm.
Work Placement – 150 hours
Term time only. The term starts in September and finishes in July.
You will need to have achieved a Level 2 related course or have GCSE’s grade 5/6 in English, Maths and a Science.
