The Certificate in Animal Nursing Assistants Level 2 is held in high regard in veterinary practices, and a great qualification to get into animal nursing.

What you will learn:

The qualification includes mandatory units that will give an understanding of the following:

  • How to deliver basic treatments to animals, including cleaning and hygiene procedures, basic health care treatments, and other routine procedures
  • How to maintain animal accommodation, including providing feed and water to animals
  • The principles of infection control
  • Introduction to animal anatomy and physiology

Alongside optional units to give an understanding of:

  • Handling and restraint of animals
  • Provide opportunities for animals to exercise
  • Companion animal parasitology and zoonosis.
  • Learning how veterinary practices work

You will be assessed by:

  • One multiple choice online exam.
  • A range of work products, Q&A, professional discussions, practical assessments.

Ideal if:

You have the desire to have a career in a veterinary practice. It provides learners with the information required to play a valuable support role to qualified veterinary staff and to assist owners in the correct management of their animals. This qualification gives a good base of knowledge and practical skills towards other animal care jobs

What to expect:

You will be able to have hands-on experience with animal health and husbandry duties for the large variety of animals within the department, including ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs to smaller mammals such as a mouse and hamster. We have a range of reptiles, including snakes, a tortoise and turtle, geckos and a bearded dragon. We even have small inverts such as snails, tarantulas, millipedes and a mantis!

Work Placement:

Learners will be expected to complete 60 hours of practical work experience within an animal care setting, in addition to this qualification.

Employer Engagement

Throughout the course you will be offered trips or professionals coming to the centre, to develop more knowledge of the sector. From rescues to zoo trips, or specialists coming in to give you insight to what they do – so you can see what is out there for you!

 

Attendance days: 16–18 year old & 19+ Learners – Tuesday & Thursday, 9:00 am – 4:00pm.

Term time only. The term starts in September and finishes in July.

Minimum grade 3 in Maths, English or Science.
