Certificate in Introducing Caring for Children and Young People Level 2
This course covers a range of knowledge, understanding and skills needed to care for and educate children aged between 0 and 11 years old, designed to support progress onto a number of sectors, including the early years educator, the supporting teaching and learning, and the children and young people. It also contains significant transferable knowledge for the health and social care sector.
Ideal if
You are interested in starting a career in Childcare and want to work in a sector with multiple ranges of employment opportunities locally as well as internationally. You want a good solid foundation for starting a career supporting teaching and learning in a school. It will help you to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to work in this sector. This course is aimed at people who have little to no experience of working in a classroom environment.
What to expect
You will attend our training centre for two days a week plus one day a week at a relevant work placement. While completing this qualification, learners may develop the knowledge, understanding and essential skills employers look for in employees. These range from familiar ‘key skills’ such as team working, independent working, independent learning and problem solving, to more tricky measure skills such as: an appreciation for appropriate behaviour and dress, appropriate interpersonal skills, communicating with professional colleagues/ peers and/or hierarchical seniors, supporting other aspiring employees, and understanding work practices and how different roles and departments function within an organisation.
What next
This qualification allows progression onto Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other Level 3 qualifications relating to Childcare, Health and Social Care or Supporting Teaching and Learning. It is designed as an entry to
employment at level 2 and will support progression into a range of job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors.
Wider Curriculum activities
Industry visits take place throughout the year, professionals from the NHS, nurseries and schools come in to talk about careers in these types of organisations. The department supports a number of local and national charities by getting involved with fundraising activities throughout the year, creating opportunities for team building and personal development skills.
What it feels like to be a student
Class group sizes are between 10 to 20 students with a dedicated tutor. Support staff are on site such as pastoral care, finance and careers advice.

Salary and Career expectations
- Pay and conditions are set by individual employers, so vary depending on the setting in which you work.
- Starting salaries may be in the region of £18,000 to £20,000 with varying levels of responsibility.
- Typically once you have some experience you’ll be able to achieve salaries ranging from £22,000 to £38,000. Roles at the top end of this bracket will often include supervisory or management duties.
