This qualification is designed for learners looking to start work in, or already working in health and social care, who would like an understanding of common health conditions and their effects on individuals.

What you learn

The course develops understanding of:

  • Common health conditions – such as dementia, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, mental health conditions, sensory loss and more.
  • Monitoring health – recognising changes, reporting concerns and understanding basic health indicators.

This knowledge helps learners understand how conditions affect daily life, independence, communication and wellbeing.

The main objective

The qualification aims to:

  • Prepare learners for further training – such as Level 2/3 Health & Social Care, apprenticeships, or specialist condition focused courses.
  • Support workplace roles where you interact with individuals experiencing health conditions – such as care assistants, support workers, activity coordinators, or community support roles.

It strengthens confidence in recognising symptoms, understanding care needs, and communicating effectively with colleagues and service users.

Why it matters

This qualification is especially valuable if you want to:

  • enter the care sector with a strong knowledge base.
  • progress into roles involving person‑centred care.
  • build specialist understanding before moving into clinical or senior care roles.
  • improve the quality and safety of support you provide.
