About this qualification

This qualification is designed to deepen your understanding of mental health in children aged 0–5 years. It equips learners with the knowledge and confidence to support early intervention and promote positive mental wellbeing in early years settings.

  • This qualification is suitable for learners aged 19 and above.
  • Early Years Practitioners looking to enhance their mental health expertise.

  • Anyone passionate about supporting young children’s emotional wellbeing.

How is this qualification structured?

Learners must achieve the 3 mandatory units.

Assessment & Support

  • You’ll complete a series of knowledge-based assignments.
  • Questions 27, 37, and 38 require reflective log entries.
  • Dedicated tutor support is available throughout the course.

Do you need to be working to take this qualification?

Experience in the workplace is not required, but practical experience is beneficial.

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to:

  • Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator): A full and relevant qualification that allows you to be counted in staff ratios and work as a qualified practitioner in early years settings.
  • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning: Ideal if you’re interested in working in schools supporting children’s learning and wellbeing.
  • Level 3 Award in Childcare and Education: Offers deeper insight into child development and prepares you for roles in education or care settings.
  • Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health: Expands your knowledge of mental health across broader age groups and contexts.
  • Health and Social Care qualifications (Level 3 and above): Suitable if you’re considering roles in social work, family support, or mental health services.
  •  Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care: A hands-on route into the sector, combining paid employment with structured training. Apprenticeships are available at various levels and can lead to roles such as Care Assistant, Healthcare Support Worker, or Nursing Assistant

This qualification would support learners to progress to, or within, employment within the health and social care sector.

You must meet the following eligibility criteria to be able to apply for this course:

  • You must currently live in England.
  • You must be over the age of 19, on 31 August in the calendar year your course starts.
  • You must be a resident in the UK on the first day of learning.
  • You must not be on an apprenticeship.
