This qualification has been designed to develop the knowledge and skills to prepare you for employment within an animal care setting using practical hands-on skills, with no exams.

What you will learn 

The qualification includes units that will give an understanding of the following:

  • Promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals
  • Deliver basic treatments to animals
  • Maintain animal accommodation
  • Control and restrain animals
  • Provide feed and water to animals
  • Prepare and groom animals

You will be assessed by:

  • A range of work products, Q&A, professional discussions, practical assessments.

Ideal if

You have the desire to work with animals and have little experience or knowledge about their care, you will be able to apply for work in roles such as: dog groomer, animal technician, dog walker, pet shop assistant/

What to expect

You will be able to have hands-on experience with animal health and husbandry duties for the large variety of animals within the department. Animals including ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs to smaller mammals such as a mouse and hamster. We have a range of reptiles, including snakes, a tortoise and turtle, geckos and a bearded dragon. We even have small inverts such as snails, tarantulas, millipedes and a mantis!

What next

For those successfully achieving this qualification you can progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Work-based Animal Care and Welfare qualification, or the Level 3 Advanced Technical Certificate in Animal Management

Work Placement and Hours

Learners will be expected to complete 60 hours of practical work experience within an animal care setting, in addition to this qualification.

Employer Engagement

Throughout the course you will be offered trips or professionals coming to the centre, to develop more knowledge of the sector. From rescues, to zoo trips, or specialists coming in to give you an insight to what they do – so you can see what is out there for you!

Attendance days: 16-18 year old learners –  Monday and Wednesday, 9:00am – 4:00pm.

Work Placement – 60 hours

Term time only. The term starts in September and finishes in July.

No Entry Requirements, learners can not already hold a Level 2 Certificate or above in Animal Care.
