This is an 12 week course for adult (19+) learners.

This introductory course will cover animal welfare and husbandry and animal behaviour. This qualification is for anyone who would like to work in animal care.

What you will learn 

The qualification includes units that will give an understanding of the following:

  • Maintain animal health and welfare
  • Introduction to the principles and practices of animal behaviour and handling.
  • Undertake practical animal feeding
  • Maintain animal accommodation

You will be assessed by:

  • Practical assessments
  • Written assessments

Ideal if

You are thinking of changing careers and want to work with animals, this course can help get you ready for a longer qualification. It is a great qualification if you cannot dedicate a full year to education or to help ease yourself back into education before going further with higher level qualifications.

What to expect

You will be able to have hands-on experience with animal health and husbandry duties for the large variety of animals within the department. Animals including ferrets, rabbits and guinea pigs to smaller mammals such as a mouse and hamster. We have a range of reptiles, including snakes, a tortoise and turtle, geckos and a bearded dragon. We even have small inverts such as snails, tarantulas, millipedes and a mantis!

What next

An extended certificate in Animal Care is designed to help you find work with animals such as kennel/cattery worker, pet store assistant, welfare charity worker and many more.

On completion of the course, you can also progress onto a level 3 qualification.

Attendance days: 19+ Learners – Friday 9:00am – 3:00pm

No work placement required. 

Term time only. This course is for 12 weeks. 

No formal qualification are required, everyone is welcome!
