What you will learn
This qualification will provide you with the skills needed to qualify as a Professional Hairdresser. You will be able to offer a wide range of treatments to clients and have a clear understanding of how your performance is directly related to the success of the business and your own salary. You will work towards the following units: creatively style and dress hair, hair colour correction services, creative hair design skills, hairdressing consultation services, cut hair using a combination of techniques and creatively colour and lighten hair.

Ideal if
You’ve worked in hairdressing or barbering for some time and want to develop your skills. You might want a broad qualification or to learn a particular technique, as well as developing your skills, and working towards gaining professional certification in the industry. You will learn a wide range of treatments on paying clients as well as learning the principles of operating a salon. The structure of this qualification provides learners with the flexibility to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway.
What to expect
You will learn in our training centre within a realistic work environment. Students practice with each other to start with and by the end of your qualification, you’ll be demonstrating your skills on paying clients. For each unit your assessor observes and asks questions as you perform tasks, to assess your practical skills. All your assessments take place in our salons and your understanding of theory will be tested by the completion of online tests. Your course is an End Point Assessment process with your tutor and a moderator.
Attendance days
09:00 – 16:00 Tuesday and Thursday Term time only
The term starts in September and finishes in July with a big celebration in the Guildhall. All your family and friends are invited to watch you receive your certificates.
What next
Once you have completed this course and become a qualified Hairdresser, you will be able to work in various types of businesses or move onto Higher Education training in courses such as Salon Management.

You can expect to meet industry experts from Keune, Scissor Warehouse and Affinage; they will provide you with certified specialised training.
Work placements
Work placements are part of the Advanced Technical Programme. You need to complete a minimum of 30 hours in a salon, however, our learners continue to attend their work placements and 95% of last year’s learners were offered a job in the salon before they completed their qualification.
What it feels like to be a student
Class group sizes are between 10 to 20 students, with a dedicated tutor. Support staff are on site, such as pastoral care, finance and careers advice.

Students come from a variety of schools across Plymouth, they all help each other out and develop a really good bond over the year, encouraging each other to achieve. Most students never want to leave and stay on to complete a full range of Beauty courses and gain further qualifications.
Salary and Career expectations
As a fully qualified hairdresser you can expect on average a starting salary of £18,000 and can go up to £30,000 once you have gained experience within the hairdressing industry. Work opportunities are global and varied. For example you could be working in a commercial salon or as an Independent mobile hairdresser, you could also work on cruise ships or in 4* and 5* hotel and spa facilities.

Uniform requirements
Once you have enrolled we will order beautiful tunics for you to wear each day, you will need to provide black trousers and black shoes, you really will look like a Qualified Stylist.
You will need to have achieved a Level 2 related course or ideally have GCSE’s grade 5/6 in English, Maths and a Science.
