What you will learn
This qualification is perfect for you if you have a creative flair for style and want to learn and develop your skills in the Hair and Beauty industry. This course covers a wide range of skills including: follow health and safety in the salon, client consultation for hair services, shampoo and condition the hair and scalp, promote products and services to clients, cut women’s and men’s hair, colour and lighten hair, the art of dressing hair, create an image based on a theme within the Hair and Beauty sector.

Ideal if
You want to develop your skills, and work towards gaining Professional Certification in the hair sector. This course will provide you with the skills needed to become a Professional Hairdresser. You will learn a wide range of
treatments on paying clients as well as learning the principles of operating
a salon.

What to expect
You will learn in our training centre within a realistic working environment. At the end of your qualification you’ll be demonstrating your skills on real clients. For each unit your assessor will observe and ask questions as you perform tasks to assess your practical skills. Your understanding of theory will be tested by the completion of online tests. Professional equipment: You are provided a fully equipped workstation in the training salon for you to work and train with just as you would work in a salon. You will be given a doll head and a set of scissors and thinning scissors when you begin to cut hair. It is advisable to purchase your own set of professional equipment to assist your progress on the course and to equip you ready for employment. Attendance days
09:00 – 16:00 Tuesday and Thursday Term time only

The term starts in September and finishes in July with a big celebration in the Guildhall. All your family and friends are invited to watch you receive your certificates.

What next
This qualification can prepare you to work in a salon and help you to progress onto the Level 3 advanced course, or apply for an Apprenticeship, working towards a senior role.

Wider Curriculum activities
You can expect to meet industry experts from Keune, Scissor Warehouse and Affinage. They will provide certified specialised training for you.

Work placements
Work placements are part of the programme, you will spend some time in a salon, seeing how the salon works, what each job role is responsible for. In time they may allow you to shampoo clients, wash off colours and gown up clients, ready for the stylist. You will assist the Senior Stylists in the running of the salon. All your assessments take place in our salons in the centre. Students practice on each other to start with before moving onto real clients.

What it feels like to be a student
Class group sizes are between 10 to 20 students, with a dedicated tutor. Support staff are on site, such as pastoral care, finance and careers advice.

Students come from a variety of schools across Plymouth, they all help each other out and develop a really good bond over the year, encouraging each other to achieve. Most students never want to leave and stay on to complete a full range of Beauty courses and gain further qualifications.

Salary and Career expectations
As a fully qualified hairdresser you can expect on average a starting salary of £18,000 and can go up to £30,000 once you have gained experience within the hairdressing industry. Work opportunities are global and varied. For example you could be working in a commercial salon or as an Independent mobile hairdresser, you could also work on cruise ships or in 4* and 5* hotel and spa facilities.
