What you will learn
The objectives of this course is to help learners to develop the skills and qualities valued in employees by employers and to understand and work on their strengths and weaknesses as a business admin. This course aims to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to operate as a successful business administrator within any sector or industry. It allows learners to develop skills in a range of areas relevant to business administration roles, such as communication, presentation skills, providing administrative support and concepts of digital promotion that can be used in a business setting.

Ideal if
This course is designed for learners who would like to work in a business administration role within any sector or industry. It is for learners who want to develop an understanding of the essential skills required to work successfully in a business environment and gives them an understanding of business culture and responsibilities. There are no specific entry requirements for his course: however learners may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved a level 2 qualification.

School leavers – What to expect
You will attend our training centre for two days a week plus one day a week at a relevant work placement. While completing this course, learners will develop the knowledge, understanding and essential skills employers look for in employees. These range from familiar ‘key skills’ such as team working, independent working, independent learning and problem solving, to more tricky measure skills such as appreciation for appropriate behaviour and dress, appropriate interpersonal skills, communicating with professional colleagues /peers and /or hierarchical seniors, supporting other aspiring employees and understanding work practises and how different roles and departments function within an organisation.

Work placements
All learners are encouraged to complete a number of hours at a good quality work placement to enhance their knowledge and skills in the Business industry. The Business Services Department have very good established links with lots of local businesses and will be able to support you to find a great placement.

What next
The course will accredit and develop your skills and knowledge in business administration. It will help you to secure long-term employment and to progress to job roles such as Finance Officer, Secretary, Executive Assistant and Personal Assistant. You could also progress onto an advanced apprenticeship or higher level studies at University or FE Colleges.

Wider Curriculum activities
Employer visits will take place throughout the year with professionals from organisations such as Plymouth City Council and Vospers coming into class to talk about possible progressions into the business sector following completion of the course. Employers can share valuable information with the class about the huge variety of roles and the range of salaries that could be expected along with typical work duties and apprenticeship recruitment including when it is best to apply.

What it feels like to be a student
Class group sizes are between 10 and 20 students with a dedicated tutor. Support staff are on site such as pastoral care, finance and careers advice.

Salary and Career expectations
Progression opportunities include either further study or direct job opportunities in Business Administration, Marketing, Business Management, Secretarial, Personal Assistant, Media or public relations roles. At present there are 509 annual business support related jobs available within the local labour market (this being above the current national average for demand!). There are 34 personal assistant annual openings in Plymouth and 48 receptionist annual openings. Salaries can range from a starting wage if £18,000 to £70,000 for higher level roles.

Term time only. The term starts in September and finishes in July
